Senior Editor Tony Layser sat down with W. Kamau Bell and comedian/writer Janine Brito of FX’s Totally Biased to discuss their show, their boss Chris Rock, and putting “the white man” in cages. The interview was shot at Austin’s Hideout Theatre during SXSW 2013. So far, we’ve showed you our chats with IFC Comedy Bang Bang band leader Reggie Watts and hedonistic Spring Breakers writer-director Harmony Korine. Now, we get the no-holds-barred, no-nonsense comedian W. Kamau Bell and his chic geek writing partner Janine Brito.

I have to say, not many women outside of Janelle Monae can pull off the suit and bow-tie look, but Janine did. I wonder if she’ll have any clue what I’m doing when I hiss at her. As for W. Kamau’s comment that all single straight white dudes should be locked in cages, I don’t know that it’ll have the effect he was looking for. Somehow, some way, we’d score booze and it would turn into “Rage in a Cage”. Might even air on PPV. Might even turn a profit.

For those who are still in the dark about W. Kamau Bell, he’s a founding member of the stand-up comedy collective Laughter Against the Machine and co-host of The Field Negro Guide to Arts & Culture podcast.

Punchline Magazine called him, “one of our nation’s most adept racial commentators with a blistering wit,” and he’s been voted “SF’s best comedian” by the SF Weekly, the SF Bay Guardian, and 7×7 Magazine.

His recent stand up album, “Face Full of Flour”, was named one of the “Top 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2010” by iTunes and Punchline Magazine.
