‘Spring Breakers’ Director Harmony Korine Talks Hedonism
If you’ve been following us on the blog, you know how much attention we’ve paid to Spring Breakers. It’s one of the movies screening at South by Southwest (“SXSW”) that we think you should keep an eye on. Why? Because it’s sexy and downright dirty. Any time you can see Disney teen queens Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in bikinis doing very un-Disney-like behavior, you can bet your Mickey Mouse bucks the media will be all over it. So, our Senior Editor Anthony Layser sat down with the film’s writer and director Harmony Korine as part of our Profound Minutiae series in Austin to see what’s up.
Here’s a quick background on the movie:
Four college friends and dorm roommates can’t afford to go to Spring Break, so they rob a convenience store. Unfortunately, they’re arrested on drug charges but get bailed out by hustling gangster, Alien, who takes them into his vast criminal world.
Though most people think James Franco’s character “Alien” was based on Kevin Federline (as Tony notes because of the cornrows), it’s based on underground rap artist Dangeruss and influenced by another rapper, Riff Raff (who’s worked with Simon Rex aka “Dirty Nasty” and Andy Milonakis aka “That Grown Adult Who Looks Like He’s 12″). I think it’s fairly obvious Riff Raff and Dangeruss should collabo. It’ll be like the white version of Watch the Throne.
As for Club Hedonism… How in the world has Harmony not heard about it? I understand he never went on Spring Break and this movie is his way of experiencing it, but the fact he’s never heard of Florida’s premier swingers club when he wrote 1995′s Kids and filmed an entire film in Florida about the annual hedonistic college tradition is mind-blowing. And you know his next project will be about that. We want 10% of the back-end.
The film premiered at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in September 2012, but SXSW marks its US premiere. It will be released in New York and Los Angeles on March 15th then nationwide on March 22nd.
It currently has a 67% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 52 out of 100 on Metacritic.
The Huffington Post described the film as “Scarface meets Britney Spears.”
IndieWire stated the film would be a future cult favorite for “midnight moviegoers”.
