SXSW 2013 Music Preview: 9 Shows To Check Out
South by Southwest features over 1,000 musical acts and that’s not even including all the unofficial showcases taking place in parking lots across Austin. As someone who’s been to SXSW many times, it’s hard to know where to start. You say you’re going to that cool, free Flaming Lips show at Auditorium Shores and you end up at the Moose Family Center Lodge. It’s basically organized chaos. Since you have to start somewhere here’s a list of great music to see at this year’s festival.
Youth Lagoon – “Afternoon” (Running Time) via Spin Collectif Paris
Youth Lagoon’s new album came out March 4th and it’s seriously amazing. Seriously. We named his upcoming album one of March’s most buzzworthy. After the show you’ll probably wander around Barton Springs contemplating how you can have so many anxieties when the world is this beautiful, man.
Youth Lagoon is playing at Club de Ville at 12 AM on Friday, March 15th.
Gold Fields – “Treehouse” via Gold Fields
Gold Fields was named one of the artists to watch in 2013 and we thought the above video deserved a VMA. Their brand of light-spirited dance music brings back warm, fuzzy memories of The Rapture and early Arctic Monkeys.
Gold Fields is playing Republic Live (at Dailymotion’s own D-Tour event) at 8 PM on Monday March, 13th.
Pissed Jeans – “Bathroom Laughter” via BlastroNetworks
After you’ve seen Youth Lagoon and contemplated your existence Thoreauvian style you should go see hardcore punk band Pissed Jeans. You can join the huge, brutal mosh pit and generally punch people in the face. The video you see above was one of our Music Videos of the Week. Solid.
Pissed Jeans is playing at 11000 Warehouse at 9:20 PM on Thursday, March 14.
Robert Delong – “Global Concepts” via Balcony TV
Robert Delong makes dance music but he’s not standing in front of a turntable. He plays a drum set, keyboard, synthesizer and sings all at the same time. It’s amazing to watch.
Robert Delong is playing Republic Live (at Dailymotion’s own D-Tour event) at 8 PM on Monday March, 13th.
“Parental Advisory” - Talib Kweli feat. Kendrick Lamar and Curren$y
People are already calling Kendrick Lamar the best rapper of all-time. Talib Kweli is a socially-conscious rapper who rose to stardom with the likes of Kanye West and Common. This dope video features Kendrick Lamar and Talib Kweli laying down some great verses about their home cities (Compton and Brooklyn respectively). Since they’re both at SXSW at the same time we can only hope one of them drops in on the other’s showcase.
Kendrick Lamar is playing three showcases at SXSW including a 12:30 AM set at Austin Music Hall on Friday March, 15th. Talib Kweli is also playing three showcases including a 1:00 AM set at Haven on Saturday March, 16th
Dawes – “Time Spent In Los Angeles” via Balcony TV
Dawes is going on tour with Bob Dylan in April if that helps give you a rough idea on what the Los Angeles-based folk band sounds like.
Dawes is playing three shows at SXSW including an outdoor set at Mohawk at 10:15 PM on Friday, March 15.
Funeral Suits – “All Those Friendly People” via Funeral Suits
This four-piece rock outfit from Ireland offers up insanely catchy pop harmonies. This song will be stuck in your head for the next week. Sorry (not sorry).
Funeral Suits is playing Republic Live (at Dailymotion’s own D-Tour event) at 8 PM on Monday March, 13th.
Surfer Blood – “Swim” via The Orchard
Surfer Blood makes refreshingly charming “surf rock with an indie charm.” It’s like if The Beach Boys had a threesome with Arcade Fire and M83.
Sky Ferreira – “Everying is Embarrassing” via Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira is reminiscent of Madonna in the early 1980s. That being said: she doesn’t make the manufactured “Like A Virgin I’m Making A Statement About Art” music Lady Gaga is trying so hard to recreate. It’s just fun dance music and it’s awesome.
Sky Ferreira is playing Republic Live (at Dailymotion’s own D-Tour event) at 8 PM on Monday March, 13th.
