Motionmakers of the Week: Debbie Downer, James Brown, Tummy Table

Depressa Boy Drama Productions video

Beginning today and running until the end of time, I’ll be highlighting a different handful of up-and-coming motionmakers aka independent / amateur filmmakers and video producers each week. This crop of creatives includes a captivating time-lapse video of an astronaut’s view from space, an animated tribute to James Brown, a real Debbie Downer, a soulful rebirth of 90s hip hop, and a dude who’s down with chowing down off a girl’s belly. Check out the latest and greatest from our Motionmaker community below.

“Further Up Yonder” by Giacomo Sardelli

Giacomo is a filmmaker, photographer who wanted to use pictures taken from the International Space Station to tell a story and share the message sent by the astronauts who worked on the station in the last 11 years. This is his first attempt at timelapse video.

Every picture has been post processed individually before being imported in the non-linear editing software. That doesn’t sound meticulous at all.

Pictures were downloaded from the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center and edited with Photoshop CS6.

What’s that song? It’s “Synthetic Truth” by digitalR3public.

It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World by Shoot The Boss

Animation house Shoot the Boss created this moving portait of “The Godfather of Soul” for a music video challenge. They employed styles and themes that reminded me of Adult Swim’s Boondocks series and CGI-laden noir thriller Sin City. The end result is one that paints a somber yet powerful message of struggle and hope. On a slightly related note, I need a cape and a cane very badly.

“Depressa” by Boy Drama Productions

Boy Drama Productions is a comedic production company based in Los Angeles that was founded by Cait Raft and Khalehla Rixon. They’re really pretty, really smart NYU Tisch graduates, screenwriters, comedians, producers, editors, and friends with Justin Bieber*. Their personal interests include “pasta, crying, tea, sex, and tears”.

Their music videos –  Maroon 5 parody “Pubes Like Jagger” and rap video “Pinot Greej N Coke” – have been featured on Buzzfeed and College Humor.

Cait’s web comedy career started at Landline TV editing video and writing. She has also worked with Jest.com and College Humor as a production coordinator and contributing writer.

Khalehla Rixon recently creatively advised on the new MTV comedy, Underemployed and has worked in production at an ABC daytime show.

“My Home” by Soul Square featuring RacecaR

Coming from Nantes, France, this jazzy, soulful hip hop group consisting of DJ Atom, PermOne, Arshitect & Guan Jay quickly drew attention to themselves thanks to their forceful melodic instrumentals. Their first album, “Live & Uncut” released in 2010 was considered as one of the best album of the year.

The group returns with the track ‘My Home’, mixing in the rapper Racecar from Chicago. Described as, “A real tribute to Hip-Hop from the 90’s”, the vibe conjures up memories of Jurassic 5 and A Tribe Called Quest. I only have one question – when are people gonna start hosting ’90s parties?

The video was directed, edited and designed by William Arshi Le Bras of Collectif CQC

“Lemme Eat That Off Yo Abs” by Douglas Widick

Douglas Widick is an actor, comedian, and musician who studied at NYU Tisch (do I smell a collabo with Boy Drama?) and Upright Citizens Brigade. He’s appeared in a segment on The Rosie O’Donnell Show and was the mastermind behind another Dailymotion favorite, ‘Hipsters (are Roaming the Campus)‘. His special skills include yo-yo, freestyle rap (der), and impersonating Marlon Brando.

In this so-seductive music video, Douglas expresses his desire to dine on a fine washboard. Douglas wrote, produced, and edited the joint with help from Luke Koz, Marie Bullano, Casey Donahue, and Mariliza Parker. Dan De Lorenzo directed a cast that included Doug and a host of others.

“I wanna use your tummy as a table” is the hot new pickup line. Be careful using it at Wal-Mart.
