10 National Anthem Wins & Fails

On September 14, 1814 Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem. It wasn’t recognized for official use by the Navy until 1889 then took another 27 years for the President to give his seal of approval. However, it didn’t become our national anthem until March 3, 1931 when a congressional resolution was signed by President Herbert Hoover. So, it’s safe to say we’ve had plenty of time to learn it, yet it seems every other month a video of a singer fouling it up circulates online.
Before we get on our high horse to judge, the truth is no matter how many times you’ve lip synced the tune, it’s a whole different ballgame out on the field, rink, or court. You’re on an island with thousands – nay – millions of eyeballs beaming lasers into your heart and stomach. We just find it funny that people think it’s Un-American to mess up. We’ve been wetting the bed for centuries! It’s the American way.
So, we’re presenting the best and worst national anthem wins and fails. You can’t appreciate the highs without the lows (and vice-versa). God Bless… uh… hold on… oh yeah – America!
WINS
1. CAN Beat That With A Bat
America’s theme song on a symbol of our national pastime. Of course, football has pretty much taken over as America’s sport, so we’re awaiting the updated version featuring goalposts.
2. Presidential Re-re-re-re-miiiiix!
JibJab delivers the hype on the stars & stripes. Reagan, Kennedy, Nixon, FDR, both Bushes, LBJ, Ford, Carter, Clinton, and Teddy put aside their political affiliations for this Commander-in-Chief collabo. Holler at your ballot, y’all!
3. Jack Black Hangs the Banner in the School of Rock
The Tenacious D lead man put his powerful pipes on full display to honor the red, white, and blue. That’s we call in the biz, NAILING IT.
4. Gentlemen, Start Your Anthem
Red Bull might give you wings, but this creative rendition of the Star Spangled Banner via F1 race car engine will definitely lift your patriotic pride.
5. Star-Spangled in the Making
Do we have another Britney or X-tina in the works? Let’s hope she doesn’t go all diva mode on us.
FAILS
1. The Five-0 Scores a Zero
Wow, dude. Just. Wow. Someone needs to serve and protect our ears.
2. Steven Tyler’s Wild Cries
Sure, a lot of people think he butchered or botched this performance, but it’s because he doesn’t have thrashing guitars and thunderous drums backing him up. Ever listen to David Lee Roth’s vocals only track in the studio? Sounds like he’s passing a stone.
3. Third Time’s a Charm?
Honestly, I think it’s okay if you screw up and you want to start over. Messing up a second time is pretty brutal. She tries to escape, which is understandable, but is forced back on the ice only to slip and fall. Getting booed then laughed at doesn’t help. She’s probably a hermit who is scheduled to make an appearance on ‘Hoarders.’
4. She’s Literally Dying Out There
Take your time, honey. It’s your show.
5. Christina Aguilera Gets ‘Lost in the Moment’
Remember the 7-year-old who nailed it? Well, Christina’s been singing the anthem since that same age and yet here she is fumbling over the words. While she got caught up in the spotlight, we found ourselves missing the mistake due to her other ‘gifts’.
