11 Music Videos That Deserve a VMA
The 28th edition of MTV’s Video Music Awards takes place tonight. There have been a slew of notable moments over the past three decades including Madonna’s make out with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, Eminem’s army of Slim Shady ‘clones’, and Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift.
But what about the videos? That’s the only reason we’re here, right? However, it seems like the same artists get nominated every year (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Bieber, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Drake). And let’s get serious, One Direction could film themselves taking a dump in a horse trough and it’d win. We’d like to shine the spotlight on other underappreciated artists (and production crews) that deserve an astronaut. Check out OUR nominees below.
BEST USE OF SHAPES: “Arcades” by C2C
Are you into shapes? Both angular and curved? Then this is the video for you. C2C (formerly known as Coups2Cross) is an award-winning turntable group consisting of four French DJs. They released their first EP called “Down the Road EP” in January 2012.
BEST SEIZURE-INDUCING: “Cryptocracy” by Huoratron
Here’s a fun fact: My uncle has seizures. Hopefully, you’re didn’t watch that vid, Uncle. If you’re the kind of person who read the warning and thought, “YES!” then we should be best buds. Let’s do drugs together.
MOST HUNGER GAMES-ESQUE: “Greyhound” by Swedish House Mafia
This one could’ve also won for ‘Best Vodka Commercial’ – if you remember bits and pieces were used for Absolut Brooklyn’s TV spot. If this isn’t a scene in the next ‘Hunger Games’ installment, someone done messed up.
TRIPPIEST: “Today’s Supernatural” by Animal Collective
As if the band’s music needed to up the bug-out factor they throw in the world’s scariest clown. Thanks, Animal Collective — my previously dormant nightmare library just added a west wing.
BEST REGGIE WATTS CAMEO: “Night & Day” by Hot Chip
So, the Music Man from Comedy Bang Bang isn’t the only cool cameo in this vid; it also features supermodel Lara Stone and General FREAKIN’ Zod (Terence Stamp). Though his scowl will make you cower, his frown at the end of the video will turn yours upside down.
MOST EROTIC UNDERTONES: “Spellwork” by Austra
It’s like the prelude to a Pilgrim / Amish / Wicca orgy. Sign us up. Sure, you’re probably going to lose a lot of blood, possibly a limb or two, maybe even some organs, but just think of the story. Plus, WATERMELON!!! You know there’s grain alcohol up in that fruit.
BEST STOP-MOTION: “Dream Music Part 1 & 2″ by PermaGrin Films
While Animal Collective gives us scary trippy, this one’s nice mellow trippy. Almost like those ‘Above the Influence’ commercials without the anti-fun messaging.
BEST MASHUP: “Input Output” by Eclectic Method
I dare you to sit through this epic mashup and not react. There’s something for everyone.
BEST OPENING FOR A MOVIE: “Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia
I haven’t seen “Chronicle” but this feels like an alternate opening for it. I heard this song about 900 times over Labor Day Weekend to the point where all my thoughts were consumed by the lyrics. I literally couldn’t get it out of my head, which made me think of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Outta My Head”, which then got stuck in my head. Not sure which is worse. Anyway, great storytelling elements here – def might get picked up by MTV.
BEST SEX DOLL: Make The Girl Dance “Broken Toy Boy”
Hey, girls have urges, too. Hate to keep falling back on movies, but this one has a ‘Lars and the Real Girl’ vibe to it. Surprised a Ryan Gosling sex doll hasn’t hit the market yet.
BEST USE OF SMOKE MACHINE: “Treehouse” by Gold Fields
I never understood why there was never a movie made about a smoke machine that when activated can transform a reality into a fantasy. Get on that, scientists.
