New York City Geeks Out at NY Comic Con
This may come as a shock, but I have never been to a Comic Con, let alone the New York Comic Con, which has become one of the biggest comic events on the East Coast. Needless to say I was very curious and jumped at the chance to go (my job is very cool).
The moment I walked in, it was crazy costumes galore – zombies, Captain Americas, anime characters (some of them VERY scandalously dressed I would venture to say), Hogwarts uniforms, Harajuku girls, of course the classic Star Wars people, and I even saw a few old school Power Rangers!
Everyone was representing, and if someone wasn’t in full costume, you’d better believe they were wearing a comic t-shirt, predominantly X-Men I would say. I may or may not have felt somewhat out of place. That aside, it really was a lot of fun and everyone was excited to be there.
The very first panel I attended was Batman: Arkham City. The creators of the original Arkham Asylum (“The Most Critically-Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever” according to the Guinness Book of World Records) were there to talk about the upcoming sequel to the game. Also in attendance were Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, and the lead singer of Coheed and Cambria, who created a track on the soundtrack. They answered questions, gave the audience a sneak preview of the new game (it looked awesome – there was a lot of shouting from the audience), and gave away prizes! Sadly I did not win anything and I’m convinced the entire thing was rigged. No matter what anyone may say or what photographic evidence they have, I did NOT have a temper tantrum that included shouting to Kevin Conroy that Christian Bale is way hotter, throwing my lunch at the stage, and storming out of the auditorium, knocking over chairs as I left.
As a first-timer, I get why people are into these things. This seems to have been the best year yet – with appearances from the creators and cast of AMC’s The Walking Dead, the stars of Conan the Barbarian (yes, this means Rose McGowan), the creators of Dark Shadows series (the upcoming film directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp is to be released next year), the cast of The Avengers, the publishers of DC Comics, Frank Miller, and many more.
And most importantly, Eddie McClintock from the greatest show of all time, Felicity, was in attendance.
