Beta-launch of a copyrighted video detection tool
Upon the request of entertainment industry copyright holders, we have recently beta-launched a tool which allows us to identify copyrighted content and to prevent its publication on Dailymotion.
This solution, which has been developed by Audible Magic, allow us to detect copyrighted videos and to isolate them from other videos for which our users and media partners hold distribution rights. This tool is automatic, and as such, as soon as a video is submitted to the site, a fingerprint is created for the file and sent to a database of similar fingerprints provided by copyright holders. If the uploaded file matches a protected file within the database, the video is not published on the site. In the event that an agreement exists with the copyright holder, we will be able to propose to our users that their file be replaced online by the original version.
The launch of this tool is part of our collaborative strategy with content creators to make Dailymotion a destination where web users and creators can maximize their interaction.
We are aware that the testing of this tool may pose certain problems to our users. For example, slideshows or videos featuring lip syncing may well be blocked by the system because the music featured in the video is currently protected under copyright law. In order to work around this problem, we are currently studying a tool which would offer the possibility to replace the copyright-protected music in a user’s film with an alternate soundtrack, from a selection of titles available within the public domain or whose distribution rights have been negotiated with our partners.
Please rest assured that throughout the testing phase of this tool, we shall do our best that it respects Dailymotion’s vision to develop an independent and open site, providing a place where users of all talents can express themselves.
Update:
This tool does not yet affect videos published before its launch. Older videos will be subject to Audible Magic control once the test is finished.

How would this technology impact on fair use of copyrighted material, such as excerpts of a copyrighted song or parodies?

I have more and more difficulties to go to the admin page of my group (it stays half blank). It is may be because there are a lot of videos. It would be great if you could manage that as well.

Is this Beta tool the reason I cannot view my favorites anymore? They all come up as content rejected. I was really enjoying this site. Are we finished with the posting of softcore porn? I have left messages on the “contact us” page and commented to others about this problem and no one has reponded. Please let me know what is going on. Thanks.

I’m getting “Content Rejected” on all videos of an adult nature, expect those that I’ve uploaded myself. I can see that others are viewing videos, but I can not. Is there
something we need to correct/add to our profile?

Fuck dailymotion, i lost over 1 year of video uploads… about 700 videos gone.. and when asked what happened you never get an answer… You cannot trust dailymotion with your videos, so i am back using YouTube and Sevenload…
Dailymotion sucks big time, nobody should use this stinking french site!

I love posts like this! Keep up the great blog, I’ve bookmarked it and added it to my RSS reader to check out more often.

Found all my favorites(lesbians) are now in breach of terms of this site–this really stinks–I really liked this site.
would be nice if somebody responded to my many inquiries in the past about this, but nobody has—
such a shame
was an outlet where my perverted mind could go.

This so-called finger printing software is bullshit because original and personal videos from myself and others are rejected!
July 27th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
How do I see videos containing some nudity - all of these videos display “contnet rejected”
How do I see these videos?
July 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
any videos I select to view are shown with a “content rejected” notice- what do I have to do to see these videos?
July 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
It is unreasonable to think that you are not addressing the questions everyone has been giving you about your site. Content rejected is the problem. If you do not address this problem you will lose us all. Or maybe that is your intention. It seems like only the americans are being rejected on the site.
Thanks for your quick response to all of our inquiries
July 27th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
I want the answer everyone wants. If I can’t look at any of the “content rejected” vids this site is useless.
July 27th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
Dailymotion is a french website, and there, they go.
Dailymotion, do as you want, but, you have maybe the need to take a look at what the rest of the web is doing, you will be highly overpass by youtube, who already got a special feature, that you won’t get, they got open debate about politics, and this has the reach a level so high than even CNN are putting the video from youtube to CNN and show those video directly in political debate.
And on youtube, or any other websites close to it, do.
So if a French dailymotion wants to forbid, what belongs to others, on their website.
I don’t care it is not my problem. Dailymotion will sux, that’s all.
July 27th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
FYI, the word is NOT “impact” but “affect”.
If you are going to continue to claim to be an American site and not a French site, using could English would support that fiction. But, being French, courage and doing the right thing are not part of your culture.

I see from the above “explanation” by the DM Team re their copyright seeking tool as well as the posts from others that I am not alone in experiencing the “content rejected due to breach in terms of use” (BS) explanation. Quel damage, as I used to regard DM quite highly. I am aware that the entertainment industry is up in arms against pirating and violation of their copyrights, and sometimes agree with it. However, if DM paid anything for its Beta version of a protected copyright blocking program, it got stung, as one can find multiple versions of clips from “American Pie 5″ (The Naked Mile) on the site, while anything containing partial nudity or bordering on softcore, even if homemade, has been zapped. It appears that the censors might be the ones doing the Beta testing, and the hell with copyright protection. Hmmm

If it is really Dailymotions vision to be ‘ an independent and open site, where users of all talents can express themselves’ then why are they rejicting hundreds of videos ?
July 28th, 2007 at 3:47 am
I want to repost, because, I’m still thinking about it.
Copyright are done to protect artists, so far, no videos upload on Dailymotion was violating copyrights, but promoting artists on Dailymotion.
Really, it is all what I see there, the goals of video clips are to promote bands and artists. It is how the musical business is working. Multicasting videos on dailymotion only promote artists, this promotion, aren’t posted by any compagnies.
We should get paid by the industry to advertise their “protected” artists.
It is how I see. I’m not sad to not be able to post videos of artists I like, but I think the tool dailymotion is using is worthless and stupid.
This tool is not protection rights of author, but totally destroy any kind of advertising.

Wait a minute, Dailymotion is based in USA, look a the video for the fourth, look at the BBQ, it seems to be a Weber.
Hey pips, no need copyrights detection tool, it is not an US or international law, you can totally ignore it.

I don’t have a web site, only an email address. The whole thing boils down to one fact,
Daily Motion has joined the strip tease industry to show enough for enticement purposes without the sale of alcoholic beverages, yet it only serves the sadist side of the dominatrix to titilate the senses of the subject, frustration after frustration waiting for a climax of sorts, which never comes, purely neurotic enhancement.

I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100% regarding Beta-launch of a copyrighted video detection tool, but it’s just my opinion, which could be wrong
August 8th, 2007 at 1:09 am
I’m glad that you removed all the evil videos. In my country, you would have been castrated in public simply for THINKING about hosting such videos. Now, I can visit the site in peace.
Peace be with you, God is great.
August 10th, 2007 at 7:16 am
well, since dailymotion isn’t gonna share the great lesbian videos, anyone know where I can actually find some similar softcore ones?
August 11th, 2007 at 2:33 am
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article Beta-launch of a copyrighted video detection tool, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

Seems to me, if they didn’t hand you the embedding code, they wouldn’t want you re-publishing their work. But isn’t advertising involved? Yes it is, and that’s MONEY.
